EngHack 2022
Department Computer Science and Informatics concluded its final 48-hour hackathon program,“EngHack 2022”, on September 08, 2022 amidst a large gathering spearheaded by Chief Guest, Dean of Faculty of Applied Sciences, academic staff and industry experts.
“EngHack 2022” was intended to develop mobile and web applications to improve the English language skills of undergraduates with a particular regard to competencies such as Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and Grammar. The “EngHack” hackathon series is one of deliverables of collaborative effort with AHEAD Project, which falls under the objective of “Improving the English Language skills among Undergraduates”. This event is one its kind to showcase the English learning creativity of students especially in team settings.
The event was attended by number of teams consisted of 2nd, 3rd level and 4th year undergraduates. The ‘Team Rolex’ Won 1st place and teams ‘Coding Stars, ‘Blue Eagles’, ‘500 Internal Server Error’, and ‘SynTax’ won 2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place, and 5th place, respectively. The winners were selected subjected to an extensive evaluation panel comprised academic staff, namely Mr. H. M. S. N. Ariyadasa, Mr. N. E. C. Jayasekara and industry experts Mr. P.G.N.S.S. Pilapitiya (Technical Lead Mitra Innovation) and Mr. W.M.P.S. Weerasooriya, Software Architect (Application Technology, Sysco Labs). Moreover, a number of resource persons from several industries and academic staff joined the event in a consultive capacity.

D Interactive Smart Classroom Complex of the Faculty of Applied Sciences
The ceremonial opening of the D interactive smart classroom complex of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) was held on 22nd of March 2022 at the D block with the presence of the honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera and other distinguished invitees. D interactive smart classroom complex consists of three classrooms of capacity 48 (2 classes) and 112 (1 class). All the three classrooms are equipped with a smart interactive board, display screens, a graphic tablet and a FM mic for the teacher, microphones for the students, a sound system and fast internet connections through cable and Wi-Fi. In addition, the facility to plug personal laptops of each student is also provided. The classrooms are prepared with comfortable furniture with a relaxing environment for an effective teaching and learning process. These interactive smart classrooms are made with the goal to promote the leaner centered teaching and to make the globe closer to the undergraduates of our university by video conferencing capabilities and distance interactive teaching methods.
This facility was made under the Activity 03 of the AHEAD ELTA-ELSE Faculty Development Project and was funded by the AHEAD ELTA-ELSE Faculty Development grant won by the Faculty of Applied Sciences. This activity was coordinated by Prof. Pamoda B. Ratnaweera (Activity 03 Coordinator) and Dr. Sandhya Senevirathna (Sub-Coordinator-Activity 03). Without the support of Prof. Jagath Pitawala (Dean, FAS), Asso. Prof. Sandya Kumari (Project Coordinator), Mr. F.F.A. Farouk (Works Engineer), Mr. Thisara Perera (Network Administrator), Academic Staff of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Mr. Indika Weerasundara (System Analyst), Technical Officers of the Department of Computer and Informatics, TEC and Procurement committee members, Ms. Wasana Nadeeshani (FAS Project Assistant) and OTS office members, this classroom complex will not be a reality. We are also grateful to the constructor Mr. Dasan and the suppliers, Leema Creations for all the furniture and John Keels, Prome and Dynamic AV Technologies for the electronic items and sound systems, for their collaborative efforts to make this environment perfect and amazing.
Department of Computer Science and Informatics handshakes with SLASSCOM and EDB
Two- day workshop which was jointly organized by SLASSCOM and Sri Lanka Export Development Board in collaboration with Department of Computer Science and Informatics of Uva Wellssa University was successfully held on 19th and 20thDecember, 2019 at main lecture theater and E3 laboratory of Uva Wellassa University. The main objective of this program was to build awareness about the Sri Lanka IT/BPM Industry, the requirements of the industry and the future prospects.
As the first day of workshop, an awareness session was conducted for 200 and 300 level students of Department of Computer science and Informatics with the students of Vocational Training centers. As the first speaker in this workshop, Mr.Kelum from VitalHub discussed about blockchain technology. The topic of role of developer, test automation, employability skills and effective communications were explained by Mr.Nayanjith Pilapitiya from ISM APAC, Mr.Kelum from VitalHub, Mr.Dilan Rajapakse from VitalHub, Mr.Harindu Abeygoonaratne from SimCentric Technologies consecutively.
Morning session of the 2nd day, the 300 level students of department of Computer Science and Informatics, Uva Wellassa Universiy and students of Vocational Training Centers were able to expose to a hands on session with the collaboration of resource persons from IT sector. As the Initial speaker Mr. kelum from VitalHub conducted a technical session on Java/Javascripts. Mr.Nayanjith Pilapitiya from ISM APAC gave his enormous support by doing C# session and Mr.Waruna Tennakoon from SimCentric Technologies has done a valuable session regarding source control.
The evening ceremony of day two was conducted at main lecture theater with the participation of Prof.Sisira Ediriweera, Dean, faculty of Applied Sciences, Dr.Saranga Premathilake, Head, Departement of Computer Science and Informatics. In the ceremony, Mr. Haridhu Abeygoonaratne – MD/ Simcentric Technologies, Director SLASSCOM, Mr. Saman Maldeni – Director Export Services /EDB, Ms. Vajira Kularathne – Assistant Director/ EDB, Mr. Kanishka Weeramunda – Founder Paymedia, Mr. Dilan Rajapakse Managing Direct VitalHub | General Council SLASSCOM were addressed the audience and shared their valuable experiences. Panel discussion was handled by Ms. Harshini Wickramarathne, Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science and Informatics in an effective manner and this program has become an outstanding event within the year 2019.
