Message from the Head of the Department
The Department of Science and Technology was established in 2005 and has been offering a SLQF Level 6 degree in Science and Technology since 2006. It aims to craft competent and skilled graduates with specialized knowledge and skills in Science and Technology and to promote value addition of national resources. The Department of Science and Technology offers BSc (Bachelor of Science) degrees (Internal (SLQF Level 06) & External (SLQF Level 05) which aim to develop knowledge, values, conceptual understanding and skills in students, necessary for a range of careers in the Science and Technology field. The dynamic curriculum of the degree programmes comprises course units covering subjects with theoretical knowledge and practical aspects, aimed at meeting industry demands and preparing students for postgraduate opportunities.
The academic staff of the department comprises personnel specialized in diverse areas of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Mechatronics, and Materials Science. This combination of diverse knowledge and skills in a single department, is unique to the state university system in Sri Lanka. Over the past 20 years, the department has evolved into a mature establishment with a rich academic staff profile and modern laboratory facilities. The Department of Science and Technology had only two elementary laboratories at its inception and currently possesses ten well-equipped in-house laboratories including an advanced research laboratory and an engineering workshop with state-of-the-art technology to conduct practical sessions and research activities for both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes under the umbrella of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
